Some Linux with GUI (KDE) + GTX 1070 is my main workstation.Note there is no GUI yet (only a web interface e.g. It's just a bunch of namespace'd KVM bridges and VMs.īy that point, your imagination is the limit. When the base is fully operational, the host OS "sees" no storage but its own root fs, no NICs but 1 physical to reach the outside directly (management/failsafe), no GPU, no nothing. These 3 steps are implemented as systemd services and run at boot time (takes about 2-3 minutes from power on). This file server has two virtual NICs: one to a pfSense-controlled VLAN bridge, and one to the host for NFS (because the host is dark, see note 2). The point was to modularize / decorrelate storage and KVM entirely, within this single box (so each can be changed / migrated / externalized easily). Notably, the NVMe array is mounted 'back' to the host OS: host KVM uses this as storage for all further VMs and containers (IOPS are through the roof in mirror NVMe). Manages 3 pools (mirror NVMe 2×1 TB, raid z1 for 4× SSDs, raid z2 for 6× HDD and the last 4 for backup in single mode). Host OS launches second VM: ZFS server (manual config on Linux ubuntu) which receives all physical storage (HBA when applicable) in VFIO.

See note 2 about host networking and security. It also handles VPN endpoints for my phones, laptops, and to parents house. I've got like 10-12 intefaces in there, it's funny. PfSense also receives the (virtual) 'trunk' uplink for each virtual bridge: in this star network, any traffic accross security zones must go through pfSense (proper VLAN tag, 元 filter etc). Receives 2-4 physical NICs in PCIe passthrough (WAN and LAN, which respectively go to my modem and physical 元 switch in trunk mode, and additional OPT1, OPT2 physical outputs). Host OS fires up first VM: pfSense firewall/router (freeBSD), which

I use netplan on Ubuntu for ease of config, it's just a wrapper iproute2 is how you do it and how I learned.

Here's an idea of how this works at the lowest level (awesome series of posts btw). These are "security zones" (management, user, public.) implemented virtually in Linux. We get a proper enterprise network: each bridge is gating a dedicated VLAN group (e.g. "switch"), which implement VLANs all the way, and further segregates the host OS network stack properly (lookup 'namespace' in the linux manual, this is network). Host OS creates a KVM-based network (virtual bridges i.e. There is an initial order 1-2-3 for the base: Each VM is dedicated to one job (like "servers" in IT). Host OS passes through everything except RAM/CPU and all but 2 NIC. Here's the final implementation (5 minutes read). I'll be glad to give details if anyone has questions. PSU 1200 W (xD had to mention that one) + UPS ethernet 1500 W (10-15 minutes for automated graceful shutdown)

How far can we go, how overkill could it get? (thanks to Wendell for the insipiration)īasically, can we run an entire mini-enterprise information system in one big box? Glad to report: it just works, provided you learn sysadmin at that point. The goal was: "the most universal x86 platform" (all OS, all use-cases, all at once, all VFIO for "native" performance / feel).

I built this in 2016 using enterprise-grade parts where it mattered.
